Square One with an Amazon Fire

Hi everyone!

I’m off work today through Thursday, then only work a half day on Friday.  Gotta love it!

I have two things on my ‘gotta do’ list for this time off (hubby isn’t taking any time off, but he works from home 4 days a week.)

1.  Get to know my new Amazon Fire that I got from Santa
2.  prune my roses

I was going to do the roses today (or at least start it today), but it’s ‘only’ going to be a high of 68 today, and 74 tomorrow, 76 on Thursday, so I’m putting it off and wait for the nicer weather.  🙂

I already got to where I know how to move icons on my home screen around, I loaded Twitter and Facebook and Slotomania (LOL) on it, and I even managed to upload a pretty photo and changed my wallpaper (although it took a few attempts to get the ‘saved’ / ‘downloaded’ photo to show in my ‘photos’ folder.

I can’t find a very detailed ‘how to’ tutorial yet, even on Amazon, for my current model, just the very barest of minimums, so I have to putz to figure out.  All my books are there and with the covers showing in the Kindle ‘library’, it looks pretty spectacular.  But I have to sync the book on my Paperwhite, to see how a book actually looks on the Fire lighting system; hope it’s good.

This is MUCH faster than my 3-4 year old iPad, so that’s cool.  It just takes getting used to it.  I don’t think I can bookmark webpages to the Home Screen unfortunately, only apps.  But I can access pretty easily the bookmarks in the browser (“Silk”-which is brand new to me), so not much more than 1-2 extra steps to get that.  Like I said, I need to do more putzing around with it.

Santa was very generous to me; he always is.  Lots of it are putzy little things, like a new pack of emery boards for my nails, but a few cool gifts too (like a set of 70’s soul CD’s and the Wonder Woman CD and a knit cap I was particularly lusting for.  LOL)

So, just lying low today.  We had a really great steak dinner at mom’s last night; Santa and I brought all of food and mom just kicked back and let us do it, while we all watched the late NFL game on TV.  It was a really nice evening.

We are about 3 episodes now into West World (we just started HBO last week), and I’m LOVING it.  It’s just the right level of creepy/weird sci-fi/psychological thriller.  Anyone else into it?  After we get through this we are going to start Big Little Lies.  And there are 3 Fox TV shows starting right after the first of the year that we can’t wait for (9-1-1 and the LA-Vegas comedy, as well as X-Files.)

So, that’s where I am this loving Boxing Day.

How was your holiday?  I will get around to all of your blogs later today.

Much love!

I celebrated with my family for the three days before Christmas and just spent a very quiet day on the 25th. It was definitely a white Christmas and I felt sorry for those who had to be out plowing.

Willy Dunne Wooters and I loved West World. And Big Little Lies? I loved that even more. I could hardly wait for each new episode. I don't think you should have to work a half day on Friday. I'm giving you that half day off. I'm allowed to do that, aren't I?

    Love,

It's 10 degrees and snowing here so I laughed when you said it's only a high of 68 so you're waiting for nicer weather. How nice to have all that time off. I have to go back to work tomorrow

I have a new Kindle Fire and find it very easy to use – once it was explained how to swipe apps to close them etc! I got mine on a very cheap deal on one of those online shops – now I just need to start reading again!!

I love my Fire 8 and I came from a Kindle 3rd generation so I had a longer learning curve. Don't waste money on buying a manual because it isn't detailed enough to help much. I just google to find out what I want to know. Bookmaking websites on Silk is easy and only an extra click from having them on Home.

    I can't believe you have 68 degree weather. It's 10 here.

I wish! The day before a holiday, if we work it, they give us 3 hours off. If we choose not to work it, we have to take 8 hours off, i.e., lose the 3 hours of 'holiday.' so I work a straight 5 hours, am done by 12:30 and get 3 hours of holiday. Works for me! Thanks, though. LOL

It's easy to use but not easy to set up the way you want it; Amazon is VERY proprietory. Their way or forget it. And I had it confirmed they won't let you bookmark websites to the home screen.

Yes, I had to give up on website links on the Home Screen. That said, I love the Fire. Glad I got it. And I shoved most of the Amazon apps into one folder, so I don't have to scroll through all of them. Oh and I'd never waste money on a manual for an electronic; I'm too full of myself for that. If I can't figure it out, I'd return it. LOL

I'd love to come and prune your roses! We are exactly 1 degree here in Chicago. I froze my little pinkies off making a trip to the grocery store! Nothing new…I've been in the Midwest forever.

Enjoy your Amazon Fire. I Google everything. You'd be surprised by all of the helpful advice you can get.

that's supposed to be my weather. instead we are stuck in the 40s. high and low only a few degrees apart today. I don't prune my roses until the 1st of Feb. used to wait til Valentines Day but they would already be budded out by then.

Yeesh, if I waited until February to prune them, they wouldn't bloom until June! (of course, many people don't have nice weather until June…) If I'm lucky, mine will bloom in mid-late April. 🙂
